WELCOME TO RUTGERS-NEWARK
URBAN STUDIES PROGRAM

What is Urban Studies?

Urban Studies is an interdisciplinary field that looks at cities, how they function, and the current and future concerns of their residents.  You would be taking courses from a broad range fields, including political science, sociology, and criminal justice.

Cities contain all that is most exciting and most troubling about our society. Some live in and visit cities to benefit from their concentration of arts, science, diverse peoples and cultures. Others may shun cities to avoid their concentrations of poverty and crime.

You are a student in New Jersey’s largest city, and you want to know more about the forces that have given rise to today’s urban society. Now Rutgers-Newark students can immerse themselves in the opportunities and challenges of the contemporary city by choosing a minor in Urban Studies.
