INTERNSHIPS IN URBAN STUDIES

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OUTLINE

The Urban Studies program strongly encourages students to participate in at least one credit-bearing internship as part of their academic program. Internships help bring to life the theoretical material learned in class; they help students refine their career goals; they provide hands-on experience that will prove valuable after graduation. At the same time, they allow students to participate in a variety of civic activities that contribute to the quality of life in the Newark/Northern New Jersey community.

Eligibility: Juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 average may apply for an internship through the urban studies program. If there are more interested students than there are placements, preference will be given to Urban Studies minors.

Academic credit: 3 academic credits will be awarded to those who complete their obligations to their host organization, and complete the requirements of the academic advisor.

Work requirements: Students must complete a minimum of 120 hours in their host organization (where and how these hours are spent will be determined by the host supervisor) and receive a passing evaluation from the host.  Students should also keep a journal of their work experiences. This journal will be reviewed in the on-campus seminar, and will be a valuable tool for writing the final paper.

Academic requirements:

  • As a prerequisite, students must either be attending or have completed the 3 credit Introduction to Urban Studies course. Prior to beginning the internship, students will submit a 2-3 page proposal detailing a set of topical research questions that they hope to address through the internship, the activities they will be peforming as an intern, and how those duties relate to the questions at hand.
  • Over the course of the semester, students will maintain a journal chronicling their experiences as an intern.
  • At the conclusion of the internship students will submit a portfolio upon the completion of all work requirements. The portfolio will include
  • The journal, which serves as a running log of their experiences as an intern
    • o A final paper that draws on the students’ internship experiences to address an issue raised either in the intro seminar readings, or in material covered in another course
    • o any material produced in the course of the internship (e.g. written reports, press releases, web designs, grant proposals).

Your grade will be based on your supervisor’s evaluation, your participation in the seminar, and your final paper and portfolio.

Application procedures:

Students must attend a brief orientation at the Career Development Center (CDC) to learn how to use their e-recruiting database. Please call the CDC at 353-5311, or access their website (http://rutgers-newark.rutgers.edu/cdcrun) for information. Once you are able to use their database, you will be able to view descriptions of internships. You are responsible for contacting the sponsoring agencies to arrange interviews with them; through the interviewing process you can determine which internship is best for you. It is imperative that you start this process early, or you will not be able to complete your work hours in the course of the semester.

At the same time, students should meet with the Urban Studies coordinator to discuss their internship plans. The Urban Studies coordinator is Professor Max Herman in the Sociology Department (Hill Hall 6th floor). He can be reached at 973 353-5130, or maxh@andromeda.rutgers.edu . Professor Herman's office hours for Fall 2005 are Monday 4-6pm and Tuesday 4-6pm 11

You must also be sure that you are registered for the course (975:450). If you are not registered, you will not receive course credit.
