The Urban Studies Program will be holding two exciting events in April:

Panel Discussion: Reinventing Newark II: Challenges for the Future

On Wednesday April 19th, the Urban Studies Program and the Journalism and Media Studies Program along with the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience and the Departments of Urban Education, Public Administration, Social Work at Rutgers University-Newark will present Reinventing Newark II: Challenges for the Future—a panel discussion on future prospects for the city of Newark. Panelists will include Clement Price (History), Alan Sadovnik (Urban Education), Phylis Peterman (Social Work), Michael Wagers (The Police Institute) and Marc Holzer (Public Administration). Robert W. Snyder, Professor of Journalism and Media Studies will serve as the moderator for this panel discussion. This event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 2:30-3:50 pm in Hill Hall, room 108. 

Screening: Street Fight Directed by Michael Curry

On Wednesday April 26th at 7 pm the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience along with the Urban Studies Program at Rutgers University-Newark will present a screening of the Academy Award nominated film, Street Fight, directed by Michael Curry. This film, which chronicles the Newark Mayoral Election of 2002--a hard fought contest between the incumbent Mayor Sharpe James and his challenger Corey Booker--will be shown for the first time to a public audience in the city of Newark. After the film screening there will be a question and answer session with the filmmaker. Refreshments will be served. This event, which is scheduled to take place in Ackerson Hall, room 123, is free and open to the public.
